ATTENTION PUBLIC SERVICE DIRECTOR:
PLEASE EDUCATE THE PUBLIC TO HELP PREVENT TEEN PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE
Prescription medications can provide great health benefits when used as the doctor ordered, but there are big risks when they are abused or not taken as directed. Many people may think that because medications are prescribed by a doctor it is safer to misuse these drugs than it is illicit drugs, and also think they will not become addicted. This is not the case, however, and the abuse and misuse of drugs have risen rapidly over the last 10 years with devastating consequences and has been described as being at epidemic levels in the US.
Please help promote AWARxE's important message by airing the :30 PSA which provides startling facts about prescription drug abuse. There are also two Live Read PSAs for your use, one is evergreen and the other is timely for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has organized the Take-Back Day for those who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs and can safely dispose of those medications. This PSA has no end date for use, so please air as soon and as often as possible.
The AWARxE program was inspired by Justin Pearson, a resident of Minnesota who died tragically at the age of 24 because of a prescription drug overdose. NABPF is the educational arm of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, which was founded in 1904 to support the state boards of pharmacy in protecting public health. NABPF took the AWARxE program national in 2010 with the goal of spreading prescription drug safety information. For more information on the AWARxE program visit the Web site at www.AWARErx.org.
